Reese's Law is a 2022 U.S. law that led CPSC to set a mandatory safety standard for button cell and coin batteries and the products that contain them. The standard, 16 CFR part 1263, is built around making battery compartments hard for a child to open.
CPSC's rule at 16 CFR part 1263 adopts the ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 standard. A product with a replaceable button or coin battery must have a compartment that needs a tool, or two independent and simultaneous hand movements, to open — and the compartment must not release the battery during use-and-abuse testing.
The product-design requirements apply to consumer products containing these batteries manufactured or imported on or after October 23, 2023, with CPSC exercising enforcement discretion so they apply to products made or imported after March 19, 2024. A separate labeling requirement for battery packaging, at 16 CFR 1263.4, applies to packages manufactured or imported after September 21, 2024.
A consumer product containing button or coin batteries is certified against 16 CFR 1263.3 — the product-side requirement. The labeling of the battery packaging itself is 16 CFR 1263.4, a separate code. Which one applies depends on what is actually being sold: the product, the batteries, or both.
The free Certificate Requirement Check shows whether your product falls under Reese's Law and which certificate applies, from the product's attributes.
